How to Best Honor the Fall Equinox

  • By Joaquina Cante
fall equinox meaning

“May you have a heart filled with deep gratitude for all the beauty in this change of season and her delicious bounty of food”

I think most of us already felt the subtle shift of cooler air that comes with fall. In Chinese Medicine this represents the time of year that we begin to shift from expansiveness-yang energy- into contraction-yin energy as we prepare for the upcoming winter months. Looking into the eyes of nature trees are beginning to shed their leaves as they change color, animals begin migrating to the warmer weather, and days get shorter.

As the great pendulum of the earth’s axis pauses in this quite time to begin to change course, we can also take a moment to pause, find our center, breathe, and evaluate where to move next.   Chinese Medicine tells us to begin stoking the digestive fires with warmer foods to harmonize our center. This will help prepare our digestion for the colder months as we begin to store up our reserves, very similar to what the animals do in nature in preparation for the winter months.

Eat Warmer Foods

When we think of winter, we think of the common cold. Cold weather weakens our immune system if we don’t stay on top of the game.   Chinese Medicine encourages us to begin incorporating warmer, cooked foods into our diet as we shift form summer to autumn. This will support your body in digesting food easier in order to send vital energy to where it is most needed. Adding ginger, garlic, and onions to your food will also support a healthy immune system.

Meditate on What You Need to Let Go Of

Having a daily meditation practice, for even just 10 minutes can help you realize what sort of emotions, patterns, and relationships need to be let of or enhanced upon to bring greater balance to your life. Open your heart to the intelligence of nature during this time and allow her to guide you into deeper awareness.

Spiritual Significance

Fall is a time of abundance as can be seen in the rich harvest that many of us see in our gardens. Shift your consciousness from one of lack to one of abundance with a small ritual offering gratitude for all that you have sowed this year. Begin clearing away and composting the ground, knowing that you are preparing for newer and greater visions to come.

Bring your body and inner guidance into balance during this Fall Equinox. Be aware of this inner and outer change and embrace its energy. Allow her to guide you in new directions. Happy Fall Equinox!
