Tips for Using Chinese Medicine as a Treatment for Acne

  • By Joaquina Cante
natural acne treatment

In modern America, we tend to rely on our doctors to prescribe medications or treatments to help us with our ailments. This includes acne. While there are all kinds of creams, washes, and pills available for the treatment of acne, Eastern cultures rely on something much more personal. If you have tried everything without success, maybe it is time you consider Chinese medicine.

What is Chinese Medicine?

To understand Chinese medicine, you first need to understand the general approach. In Chinese culture, there are many pieces that come together to help you maintain your health. Your life force is a vital energy known as “qi” (which is pronounced as “chi”). If you want to maintain your health, you must sustain your qi’s balance. To do this, Chinese medicine will often include a combination of herbology treatments, acupuncture, diet and exercise.

The Acne Balance

In Chinese medicine, your lungs and intestines primarily control your skin. An outbreak of acne is seen as a sign of pathogenic heat trapped in these organs. Therefore, to treat acne, Chinese medicine attempts to cool this heat. At the same time, it will work to cleanse your lungs, detox your intestines and heal the abrasions.

Tips for Using Chinese Medicine

When it comes to acne, every person is different. Chinese medicine offers an individualized approach. While our specialists can provide a personalized herbal treatment, here are a few things you can on your own.

  •         To Cool Inflammation: Chop up a cucumber and blend it with one to two tablespoons of aloe gel. Once mixed, you can apply this salve to your skin three to five times a day for up to twenty minutes each time. This will help to cool your acne, lessening the red coloration, and reduce swelling.
  •         To Cleanse Your Internal System: Boil dandelion greens, carrot tops, and beet tops in four cups of water. After twenty minutes, strain the liquid and consume it. You can drink up to three cups of tea a day to help cleanse your system, clear out toxins, and help to reduce skin impurities.
  •         To Clear Up Cystic Acne Infections: Cystic acne are those deep, puss-filled acne lumps that can be very painful and resistant to your typical facial washes. Mix a half cup of pearl barley powder with aloe gel or egg whites until you have a thick paste. Spread this over the acne and allow it sit overnight. Wash it off in the morning. Repeat this every day for one week.
