The Power of Setting Daily Intentions

  • By Joaquina Cante
how to set daily intentions

Intention is one of the most powerful forces there is. What you mean when you do a thing will always determine the outcome. The law creates the world.” Brenna Yovanoff

In the morning, we often feel hopeful and in control of our lives, excited to see what a new day will bring. We can use this positive energy to guide us through our day. Each morning, take a few minutes to think about something you want to welcome into your life. It could be as simple as kindness, abundance, or letting go of overwhelming emotions. It’s best to phrase the intention with positive-affirming words. Instead of saying “Today, I will not get angry,” we might say, “today, I will respond instead of reacting.”

Some mornings you might feel inspired, other mornings you might not. Have fun with your intention and embrace a child-like nature. The goal is to keep it simple and gentle. If you can’t think of an intention, several websites provide lists of ideas. Pick the intention that resonates with you. It’s best to keep intentions short so that we can remember it easily. Whether you create your intention or allow another source to chose it for you, the intention you select is always the right one. It’s the intention meant for you, as you are now.

You can write your intention on a piece of paper or in the Notes app on your phone. I write my daily intention at the top of my to-do list. This way, whenever I check my to-do list, I have the chance to focus on my intention. I often say my intention three times out loud or in my head. Figure out what works best for you. Whatever allows you to consistently set intentions is the right way to go.

In overwhelming moments, focusing on our intention helps us come back to our center. All we need is one moment of clarity to gain insight. Often we go about our day, reacting to one thing after another. We’re going in several directions at once, and we lose ourselves amongst the chaos. Our daily intention will help remind us that we are a spirit in a body. We are not only meant to go to work every day, completing tasks like a robot. We are a soul that needs to be nurtured. When you have free time throughout your day, close your eyes and visualize yourself living out your intention. Imagine how it feels and embrace that feeling as if you are already there, living your best self.

To create change, we must try something different. We must live something different. Setting a daily intention keeps us on the path. It reminds us of our progress. We continue on the path one step at a time. Let your daily intention be your stepping stone. Allow it to color each interaction that you have. You will be see how this simple practice can transform your life.

Above all~be happy and live well.
