How Cupping Therapy Benefits Athletes

  • By Joaquina Cante
cupping in boulder colorado

Cupping therapy has been around for thousands of years. However, it was not as well known up until recently. The Olympics brought the technique into the public foreground when fans noticed circular marks all over the bodies of several famous swimmers. Since then, more and more professional athletes have spoken publicly about the benefits of cupping therapy and their careers. Contact us today for more information!

What Is Cupping Therapy?

There are two main types of cupping therapy. The first, which is the traditional method, is a targeted treatment that can help athletes address specific aches and pains all over their body. Traditional, or stationary, cupping therapy uses a bamboo, glass, or plastic cup. In the most traditional sense, a heat source, like fire, is used to quickly heat the air inside of the cup. When the cup is then placed on the skin, it creates a suction-effect. For this, four to six cups are typically used; they are left suctioned to the skin for about fifteen to twenty minutes. On the other hand, myofascial decompression cupping therapy, also known as massage cupping, provides a more generalized method of healing. When undergoing a myofascial decompression application, silicone cups are used in conjunction with oil to smoothly glide across a targeted area of an athlete’s body.

What Are the Benefits?

When used with other forms of treatment and therapy, cupping can help athletes heal from injuries or recover from surgeries faster. It goes beyond that, however. Cupping has been known to help athletes decrease recovery time after undergoing strenuous training. This is because cupping helps to stimulate the chemical breakdown of toxins that delay muscles and tissue from healing. Cupping therapy also helps to alleviate inflammation. As the cup is applied, the suction it creates pulls the muscle and tissue beneath it away from the bone. This allows fresh blood and lymph fluids to circulate into the gap and removes the inflammation trigger. Because it increases circulation, cupping therapy also helps to boost the body’s entire immune system. For athletes who suffer from plantar fasciitis, massage cupping therapy can help decrease pain and alleviate the tension in the tissue that connects an athlete’s heel to their toes. Massage cupping therapy can also help increase an athlete’s flexibility and extension capabilities. This can help them to train harder for longer periods. If muscle spasms are a problem, massage cupping can also help alleviate them as well.
