Before Your Visit
Patients generally keep their clothes on during treatment in our clinic, so please wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing if possible. The treatment is more effective, and you will feel better, if you eat something within four hours of your scheduled appointment.
We observe a 24-hour appointment cancellation policy.
Your First Visit
Step into our clinic and make yourself comfortable in one of the chairs near the front desk. We will assist you as soon as we are able. You will be given a questionnaire to fill out and a consent form to sign. This will take about 5 minutes. To expedite your treatment, please download and complete the questionnaire and consent forms prior to your visit and bring them with you.
Your practitioner will join you for a consultation to go over your intake forms and ask you some detailed questions concerning your complaints and health. We will examine your tongue and analyze your pulse, which are Chinese medicine diagnostic tools.
Very thin disposable acupuncture needles are used. Needles are inserted with as little discomfort as possible.
Your condition may require a number of weekly follow-up visits to alleviate or resolve your symptoms. In certain cases it may be necessary to schedule two or more times per week at the very beginning of your care. In the spirit of making acupuncture available for all, at Boulder Acupuncture we offer low-cost treatment options so that each person may schedule as often as necessary to receive the most benefit possible from this medicine. Your follow-up treatment plan will be discussed with you during your first visit.
What to Expect
Preparing For Treatment
After your consultation you will be treated comfortably in a reclining chair or on a Massage table, either on your front side or on your back. Wristwatches, bracelets, socks, and shoes should be removed to prepare for treatment.
Acupuncture needles are solid and about the thickness of a hair. All needles are sterile and only used once. Appropriate acupuncture points are chosen and the needles are inserted. You may feel nothing when the needle is inserted, or slight pressure, or a tingling sensation. Other modalities like massage, cupping, electro-stimulation, gua-sha, or tui na might be used if needed.
Practitioners stay in close contact with you and encourage you to inform us if you have any sensation, anxiety, concern, or questions. We will slow down, answer any questions you have, and stop the treatment if necessary. We always honor our patient’s feelings about their treatment experience and will work to help you feel safe and relaxed in our clinic.
During acupuncture treatment you might fall asleep, feel deep relaxation, or other sensations. Take this time to go inward and be with your body. This is your time for healing.
A session usually lasts about 45-60 minutes, but it could be more or less according to your needs. Your session is over after the needles are removed and you are ready to leave. New appointments may be made either before or after your session.
Try to avoid strenuous exercise right after your session. You might feel energized after your treatment or experience an unfamiliar depth of relaxation. In our daily lives we push ourselves beyond our limits. By balancing our system with acupuncture, we might realize how deeply tired we actually are. This is a good time to take a nap to catch up on needed rest. Please let us know if you have to perform a strenuous activity after your treatment so that we can adjust the treatment plan.
Finally, call us with any questions that might arise between treatments, especially if herbs are prescribed. We will return your call within the same day.
