CranioSacral Therapy is a relatively new therapy based on osteopathy, more specifically cranial osteopathy. The basic idea is to manipulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the use of gentle touch on the cranium, spine, and pelvis. Like all treatment procedures it can be a little intimidating going into a session without knowing what is likely to happen.

What is it for?

CranioSacral Therapy is used to release deep tensions in the body, relieve pain, and improve whole-body health. Specifically, it is known to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, treat headaches, help with back pain, alleviate TMJ, and reduce stress. Similar to spinal manipulation there are many benefits to overall health. After sessions, many people report feeling different in nearly undefinable ways. People often feel more comfortable in their bodies, achieve better sleep, or even show better posture.

What Happens in There?

Your first session will start with a consultation. Your therapist will engage in a dialog with you to discover your state of mind and expectations. It’s important that you are relaxed and feel safe before any treatment begins. When your therapist can tell you’re ready you’ll lie face down, fully clothed, on a massage table. Throughout your session, the therapist will continue a dialog to help guide the session based on what you are feeling. You will feel light touch during your session, specifically on your feet, the bottom of the spine, and your head. After about 30-45 minutes your session will end.

What’s Next?

Most people feel benefits from a single session, but for lasting results more sessions will likely be needed. Many people find the results they seek by the end of 5 sessions, though some conditions require ongoing “upkeep” sessions, similar to chiropractic treatments for some conditions. The session will inform your practitioner where you are at and they will be able to provide you with a treatment plan going forward after the first session.
